Clogged printhead: how to prevent clogging on your ink tank printer

If your print came out streaked, with broken lines or a missing color, the culprit is almost always the printhead. Here is why it happens, how to fix it — and how to stop it coming back.

Why printheads clog

Ink tank printers — such as Epson EcoTank, HP Smart Tank and Canon MegaTank — are cheap to run precisely because they use liquid ink in large volumes. But that same ink is the weak point: when the printer sits idle for days, ink dries inside the microchannels of the printhead and blocks the nozzles.

The problem mainly hits people who print rarely. The longer it goes unused, the more the ink dehydrates in the capillaries — and the clog shows up exactly when you need the printer most. Low-quality ink and dusty environments speed the process up.

Signs that the printhead is clogging

• White lines or bands running across the print;
• A missing color (only cyan, magenta, yellow or black disappears);
• Colors coming out wrong or faded;
• A completely blank page, even with ink in the tanks.

How to unclog a printhead once it has happened

In most moderate cases you can fix it at home before calling a technician:

1. Run the printhead cleaning. Open the printer preferences in Windows, go to Maintenance and run Head Cleaning. Repeat up to 3 times if needed.
2. Print a nozzle check. Print the nozzle check pattern to see which colors are still failing.
3. Wait and repeat. If it still fails, let the printer rest for a few hours and repeat the cleaning — the ink softens over time.
4. Severe cases: cleaning solution. Persistent clogs may require a cleaning kit or solution made for printheads. If nothing works, take it to a service centre.

How to prevent clogging (the part that matters)

The advice from service centres themselves is simple: print at least once a week using all four colors (CMYK). That keeps the ink in the capillaries moving so it does not dry inside the printhead.
